Second US passport.
If necessary, you are allowed to hold two valid US passports. Follow the instructions below to expedite your second valid US passport.
When a second book helps
- Your main passport is at a consulate for a visa and you still need to travel.
- You travel frequently and pages fill up faster than a visa can be returned.
- Two trips overlap and one country's visa process would hold your only book.
To qualify, you must already have a valid U.S. passport book and meet at least one Department of State reason for needing a second book. The exact form and supporting documents depend on your situation.

Validity and fees
A second passport book is generally valid for four years or less. It has a different passport number and does not replace your primary passport.
Government fees depend on the application form. For an expedited adult passport book using DS-82, the current total is $216.87 when the $130 application fee, $60 expedite fee, and $26.87 1–3 day return delivery fee apply.

How to apply
Six things to prepare.
Complete the online application
The Department of State may require Form DS-82, DS-11, or DS-5504 depending on your situation. We can help you identify the correct form before submission.
You must provide a Social Security number, if you have been issued one, in accordance with 22 U.S.C. 2714a and 22 C.F.R 51.60(f).
Current U.S. passport
You must already have a valid U.S. passport book. The Department of State will review it with your second-passport request and return it according to the application process.
Flight itinerary
If you have a copy of your flight itinerary or ticket, please include it. If you do not have a travel itinerary or a ticket, it's okay.
Passport photos
Passport photo services are available at the Sameday Passport & Visa Expedite Services office. Photos must be 2″ x 2″ on a white background, and must not be older than one month.
Second passport statement
Prepare a signed statement explaining why you need a second passport book. Include supporting travel, visa, or employer documentation when it helps establish the qualifying need.
Courier authorization and service order forms
If your application qualifies for courier expediting through Sameday Passport & Visa Expedite Services, complete the required authorization and service order forms. The Department of State filing method still depends on whether your case uses DS-82, DS-11, or DS-5504.

U.S. Department of State payment methods depend on the application form. Expedited service is $60, and 1–3 day return delivery for a passport book is $26.87.
