Use the correct HMPO route
British citizens living in the United States must follow the overseas passport process. We review which HM Passport Office route fits your application before you submit.
Application and supporting documents
We can help you review the online application details, supporting documents, identity evidence, and any additional records HM Passport Office requests.
British-format photos available
British passport photo requirements differ from U.S. passport standards. We can prepare photos to the applicable HM Passport Office specification in our Los Angeles office.
Eligibility
Check the correct British passport route first.
Renewal, first adult, child, lost, stolen, damaged, and change-of-details applications can require different supporting documents. We review the current passport and application type before you begin.
- Renewal: your current or most recent British passport and any supporting documents HM Passport Office requires for your circumstances.
- Living in the United States: follow the overseas passport process rather than the domestic UK application route.
- Adult or child: the fee, documents, and application route differ by age and passport type.
- Lost, stolen, damaged, first adult, or change-of-details cases may require additional evidence. Call (310) 402-1619 and we can review what applies.
HM Passport Office advises applicants not to book travel until the new passport has arrived. A replacement passport has a new passport number, so travel records or visas linked to the old number may need updating.
Start the online application
Use the official HM Passport Office overseas passport service to confirm the correct application route for someone living in the United States. We can review the information and supporting documents with you before submission.

How to apply
What to prepare for a British passport application.
The exact evidence depends on whether you are renewing, applying for a first adult or child passport, replacing a lost or damaged passport, or changing personal details.
Complete the online application
- Follow the HM Passport Office instructions for the application route shown by the overseas passport service.
- Application review is available for your form details, supporting documents, identity evidence, and British photo requirements.
- Urgent travel: HM Passport Office controls passport issuance. If you need to travel urgently, ask us to review your situation and the official options before you rely on any private service timeline.
Passport photos
- British passport size photos measure 45 millimetres high by 35 millimetres wide.
- Passport photo services are available in our Los Angeles office. We can help prepare the photo in the format required for your application route.
Dual nationality
- Colour copies of all pages in your U.S. passport are required if you hold U.S. and UK dual nationality.
- Copies are made in office so the set is complete when the application goes in.
Proof of residency
- Proof of address or identity may be requested depending on the overseas application route and your circumstances.
- Keep details consistent. Names, addresses, dates, and other biographical information should match the supporting evidence you submit.
- Additional documents: HM Passport Office may ask for further evidence if it needs to verify identity, residence, nationality, or a change in personal details.
Residency status
- U.S. status evidence may be requested as part of the overseas application process depending on your case.
- Do not send extra originals unless required. Follow the supporting-document instructions generated for your application.
- Extra checks can extend processing. HM Passport Office may request additional information or an identity interview in some overseas cases.
Processing time
- Do not rely on a fixed 2-week promise. Overseas processing times vary by application type, country, supporting evidence, and whether HM Passport Office needs more information.
- Check the official overseas passport tool for the application method and current instructions that apply to U.S.-based applicants.
- For urgent travel, call (310) 402-1619 so we can review the official options and your document readiness before you apply.
