Rejected files come back
An application that misses one renewal criterion is rejected and returned. Sameday Passport & Visa reads the date of issue and the details in your current book before the form is started.
A renewal is the simpler route
A renewal needs no guarantor, no proof of Canadian citizenship and no supporting identification. It does need 2 references, and Sameday Passport & Visa checks that yours qualify.
Sent to Gatineau, not handed over
Applications from the United States are mailed to Canada. Sameday Passport & Visa packages the file at the Clark Street office and sends it by traceable courier.
Eligibility
You can renew only if all five are true.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada rejects and returns a renewal that misses any one of these. Sameday Passport & Visa works through them with your current passport in hand.
- An adult passport issued when you were at least 16 years old.
- Issued within 15 years of the date you apply for the renewal.
- Valid for 5 or 10 years.
- The same name, date of birth and place of birth you want on the new passport.
- The same gender identifier you want on the new passport, printed in the book or carried on an “X” observation sticker.
- A child passport can never be renewed. A new child passport is applied for each time it expires, until the child turns 16.
A change of name, date of birth, place of birth or gender identifier rules out the renewal route entirely. So does a passport issued before you turned 16. Sameday Passport & Visa will tell you which application you actually need before any fee is collected.
Get the renewal form
Form PPTC 054 is filled out on a computer in Adobe Reader 10 or higher. It will not work properly on a phone, on a tablet, or opened in a browser.

How to apply
What Sameday Passport & Visa needs from you.
One form, two photographs, two references and the current book. Each part is checked at the counter before the package is sealed and couriered.
Complete form PPTC 054
- Fill it out on a computer in Adobe Reader 10 or higher. A phone, a tablet or a web browser will not fill the form properly.
- Section 4, period of validity. State whether you want a 5-year or a 10-year passport.
- Include your email address so the application status can be checked online after filing.
- A valid visa in the old book? Say so on the form if you need the visa and want the original passport returned, otherwise it can be damaged when the old book is cancelled.
Photographs
- Canadian specifications apply, and they are not the same as the U.S. requirements. An unacceptable photo means the application is rejected and returned.
- On the back of one photo the photographer writes or stamps their studio or company name, their complete address, and the date the photos were taken.
- No guarantor signature is needed on the photo. Renewals do not need a guarantor.
Lost, stolen or damaged
- Still valid and lost or stolen. Report it to the Passport Program as soon as possible, submit form PPTC 203, and pay the extra $45 fee for replacing it.
- Still valid and damaged. Form PPTC 203 is submitted with the application.
- Already expired. Only the main application form is needed.
Your 2 references
- Each must be 18 or older and must have known you for at least 2 years.
- Each must agree to you using their name and contact information on the application.
- They must be reachable. A reference travelling abroad, or in a distant time zone, can delay the file. IRCC may ask for additional references at any time.
Who cannot be a reference
- Immediate and extended family are excluded — a spouse or common-law partner, a parent or step-parent, a child, a sibling, a grandparent, a grandchild, and the in-law equivalents of each.
- Anyone related to you by blood, marriage, common-law partnership, adoption or guardianship who lives at your address, including an aunt, uncle or cousin.
- A former spouse or partner can serve, and so can a boyfriend or girlfriend, provided you are not in a common-law relationship.
Where the package goes
Applications from the United States are mailed to Canada. A certified courier or traceable mail service cuts delivery time and protects the documents.
Addressed to Government of Canada, Passport Program. Sameday Passport & Visa prepares and sends the package for you.
If you apply to renew more than a year before the passport expires, IRCC asks the reason, and a mailed application must include a written explanation. Sameday Passport & Visa drafts that letter with you so the file is not held up.

Sameday Passport & Visa service fee
Applied in addition to the government fees. Payable by all major credit cards.
IRCC aims to process applications from the US within 20 business days, plus mailing time.
FedEx return shipping
Optional and tracked. Your return address must match the mailing address on the application.
Provide a FedEx account and Sameday Passport & Visa generates the air bill for $5.
Paying the government fee
- Fill out the payment section of the application form with a Visa, MasterCard or American Express card.
- Or include a certified cheque or money order, in Canadian funds, for the exact amount, payable to the Receiver General for Canada.
- Cash and personal cheques are not accepted.
- The service fee is not refunded if you cancel, are refused a travel document, or are issued a passport valid for a shorter period than you requested. Only the consular fee is refundable if no passport is issued.
