How to apply
Tourist visa, the rules that catch people out.
For tourism only
- Maximum stay 180 days per visit, with a 2-month gap between tourist visits.
Former nationals of India
- Former nationals of India and their spouse and children should apply for an Entry visa, which has no 2-month gap rule.
Minors under 18
- Birth certificate, both parents’ passport or ID copies, and a notarized Parental Consent Form.

Both categories are letter-driven. The Dallas office reads them against the consulate checklist before anything is submitted.
Business visa
Three letters on top of the standard document set.
- Business letter — on company letterhead with an original signature, stating the India contact, purpose, days, lodging and financial guarantor
- Invitation letter — on the India company’s letterhead, original or scanned
- Letter or Certificate of Incorporation — from the inviting India business
- Sample letter — use the sample business letter as your template
Work visa
Employment visa, for those employed by an Indian company.
- Employment visa — requires a work contract or appointment letter
- Company documents — Certificate of Incorporation and business registration from the Indian company
- Salary details — proof of salary exceeding USD 25,000 per year, stated in the employment contract
- Same base documents — passport, ID copy, online application and 2x2 photo
OCI & renunciation
The OCI card, start to finish.
The OCI card is a lifelong, multiple-entry visa for former Indian nationals and their families. Every OCI form must be notarized.
Online application
At passport.gov.in/oci. Sameday Passport & Visa assists with the application, the document upload and the photo service.
Original Indian passport
Current or expired, plus a copy of the personal information page.
Valid US passport
Plus proof of US residency: a state ID or utility bill.
OCI photo
No glasses or headwear, neutral expression, under 3 months old. Taken at the Dallas counter.
Residency status
US immigration paperwork (H1-B, H-4, L1, L2, EAD, I-120) or green card, front and back.
Renunciation proof
If you ever held an Indian passport, the cancellation stamp or renunciation certificate.
Child OCI
Both parents’ Indian passport copies, notarized consent letters, the child’s birth certificate, and the parents’ marriage certificate.
Female applicants
Marriage certificate or divorce decree.

The eVisa is the fastest route for a short tourism or business trip. Anything longer, or any work, needs a sticker visa in the passport.
India eVisa
Applied for at indianvisaonline.gov.in and emailed to you.
- Online eVisa application — valid for 60 days, double entry, for tourism and business
- Valid passport — signed, at least 1 blank page, valid 6 months beyond your travel date
- Passport photo — 2x2 inches, white background, taken within the last 6 months
- Travel details — round-trip ticket and hotel booking or host address in India
