Why a book gets limited

You should replace a limited-validity passport with a full-validity passport when you can meet the full requirements. The correct form and government fee depend on the reason for the limitation and when the limited passport was issued.

The Department of State may issue a limited-validity passport when urgent travel prevents completion of the normal requirements or when an application issue is unresolved. The supporting evidence needed for the full-validity replacement depends on the reason for the limitation.

Sameday Passport & Visa Expedite Services can review the limitation, any endorsement or consular letter, and the supporting evidence to help identify the correct application route.

If your passport came from a consulate

  • A letter was included with the passport, setting out how to obtain a full validity book.
  • That letter must be submitted with the application. Sameday Passport & Visa Expedite Services cannot substitute for it.
  • Bring the limited book itself, undamaged. It comes back to you with the new passport.
  • Changed your name since? Bring a certified marriage certificate or court decree as well.

Lost the consular letter? Call the Dallas office at (972) 231-1600 before you apply, because the replacement route differs without it.

Questions

Questions people ask about limited-validity passports in Dallas

What is a limited-validity passport?
A limited-validity passport is issued for a shorter period than a normal full-validity passport. It may be issued when urgent travel prevents completion of the normal requirements or when an application issue remains unresolved.
What documents do I need to replace a limited-validity passport in Dallas?
Bring the limited-validity passport, any letter or endorsement that came with it, a compliant passport photo, and the evidence needed to resolve the original issue. The exact form and supporting documents depend on why and when the passport was limited.
How much does it cost to replace a limited-validity passport?
There is no single fee for every case. Some eligible DS-5504 replacements have a $0 application fee, with optional $60 expedited service and $26.87 1–3 day return delivery for a passport book. DS-11 or DS-82 cases use the fees for those forms.
How quickly can Sameday help with a limited-validity passport replacement in Dallas?
The fastest listed private service option is 4 to 7 business days. Other private service levels and the Dallas office hours already shown on this page are preserved. Government eligibility and issuance remain controlled by the U.S. Department of State.
Can I apply for a limited-validity passport replacement by mail?
Some limited-validity cases can use a mail-in route, such as an eligible DS-5504 or DS-82 case. Other cases require DS-11 in person. Call (972) 231-1600 with the passport issue date and the reason for the limitation before mailing anything.
My limited-validity passport came from a U.S. consulate overseas. What is different?
Check the letter that came with the emergency or limited-validity passport. If it was issued less than one year ago, the letter will help identify whether DS-5504 or DS-11 applies. Older cases may require DS-11 or, if eligible, DS-82.
Please note

Have a limited-validity U.S. passport? Bring the passport and any letter that came with it so the Dallas team can review the correct form, fee and supporting evidence. The private service levels and office hours shown on this page remain available.
