Why a second book exists
The Department of State may issue a second valid U.S. passport book when you meet one of its qualifying reasons. The Dallas office can help you review the application route and supporting statement.
One common reason is that a foreign embassy or consulate is holding your primary passport for visa processing while you still need to travel. Other qualifying reasons can include frequent visa applications or entry restrictions related to stamps in your primary passport.
Your primary passport generally remains valid unless the Department of State determines otherwise, and it is returned after processing when you submit it with the application.
What the government asks for
- A second passport book is valid for 4 years or less, not the standard 10 years.
- If you can submit your valid 10-year passport, DS-82 may be the route. If you cannot submit it, DS-11 may be required.
- You need a signed statement explaining why a second passport book is necessary, plus supporting evidence for the qualifying reason.
- Use the current Department of State second-passport statement and form instructions for the route that applies.
Sameday Passport & Visa Expedite Services can review the statement and supporting evidence before submission, but the Department of State decides eligibility.
